Being able to read Angewandte Chemie on iPad sounds great, but unfortunately the app doesnt yet live up to the expectations. It is generally very slow and not exactly stable. Starting easily takes up to a minute, downloading a 60 MB issue may take 5 minutes or more and when the download is finished, either the app crashes or you have to quit it because it will most likely crash as soon as you do something. But once you have the issues on your iPad at last and once more waited patiently for the app to start again, you are rewarded with a very pleasant reading experience. It just shouldnt be so hard to get there.

Inhaltlich ist die "Angewandte" für mich schon seit Jahrzehnten ein unentbehrlicher Begleiter durch Studium und Beruf. Die Mischung aus Reviews, aktuellen Forschungsberichten und kurzen "Highlight"-Artikeln möglicht es einen guten Überblick über die aktuellen Entwicklungen in allen Bereichen der chemischen Forschung zu behalten und ist in dieser Form absolut einzigartig! Die App setzt nun noch einen drauf. In Hinsicht auf Navigation und Lesbarkeit auch über längere Zeiträume kenne ich zur Zeit nichts Besseres im Bereich elektronischer Wissenschaftspublikationen. Die Möglichkeit komplette Ausgaben der Zeitschift downzuloaden ist sehr praktisch, gerade wenn man zwischendurch keinen Netzzugang hat. Für mich eine rundherum gelungene App!
オンラインジャーナルを"個人購読する"時代の到来に期待を込めて
初めてレビューを書きます。まず、本ジャーナルは化学の領域では頂点に君臨する雑誌であり、その質の高さは他の雑誌の追随を許さず常に最先端を走っています。初めて大学の図書館で雑誌を手に取ってから10年以上経過しておりますが、その間に雑誌の形態が冊子体からオンラインジャーナルへと移行し、そのアクセシビリティーは飛躍的に向上しました。 本雑誌を出版しているワイリー社はこうした時代の変化にいち早く対応し、また、ipadという新しいプラットフォームに対してどの化学系ジャーナル（私自身は有機合成化学が専門なのでそれ以外の分野で既にアプリが出ている場合は御容赦下さい）にも先駆けて単独雑誌アプリを出したことはある意味必然的な流れであり、アプリ公開のアナウンスを知ったとき一番乗りはやはりAngewandteだったかと率直に感じました。 ただ、ここ数ヶ月の出版分とEarly Viewを無料で閲覧出来るというのは予想外のことで、これは大変な驚きであり、化学系ジャーナルのトップランナーとしての確固たる自信を垣間見た気がします。学術論文に限らず普通の雑誌であればアプリを出しても最新号だけ、しかも最初の数ページだけを申し訳程度に閲覧出来る程度なのですが、これに対して本雑誌は数ヶ月分のコンテンツの全ページを閲覧可能にし、アプリの内容を十二分に吟味出来るようにしています。当然、これはアプリを普及させるためのプロモーションの一環なのでしょうが、ここまでOpenにすることは相当な勇気がいることではなかったのではないかと感じています。アプリを公開するに当たってこのような英断を行った編集部の方々には只々頭が下がる思いで一杯です。プロモーションの効果は大成功だと思っております。今までレビューを書こうとは思わなかった人間が思わず書いてしまうほどの出来事でしたので。 しかしながら、プロモーションはあくまでプロモーションなので、一定期間を過ぎてアプリがアップデートされたときには現行のオンラインジャーナルの契約者のみが閲覧出来るかたちになるでしょう。オンラインジャーナルは原則企業、或いは大学のような研究機関で無ければ契約が難しい状況にあります。ただ、今回はプロモーションとは言え「個人で」興味のあるコンテンツを自由に閲覧出来るという極めて画期的なことがなされました。オンラインジャーナルは団体で契約するという常識の壁が一瞬取り払われた気がしました。今ipadで最新の総説を眺めながら、ファッション雑誌を買うように個人でも気軽に論文誌を購読出来る時代がくれば良いなと思いつつ筆を置かせて戴きたいと思います。本アプリは素晴らしいアプリです。
