Smooth, easy listening
It’s a bad audiobook
This sub didn’t let me put my email in and I am so mad at that that I say that this app is the worst audio book app
I travel a lot so the ability to listen to audiobooks is ?
A new audio book app
I’m typically a podcast listener, but decided to try audiobooks during my commutes and travels recently. I’ve tried a few different audio book apps and programs and Audiobooks is definitely deserves a high rating. The only reason I take away one star is because I dont love the verbal interpretation of some of the readers - that’s petty and has nothing to do with the app, but it is what it is. Overall, the app itself is great.
I love this app and what it offers. I live in Miami so my commute is at least 1h daily. I listened to The red dragon by Thomas Harris. I absolutely loved it.
Works pretty good, with some caveats...
So this app is functional, but its just not as polished as the Audible.com app. I bring it up because it does seem like this app aspires to look and function like Audible, which makes sense since theyre the ones to beat in this game. However, there were some crucial differences between the two that were a dealbreaker for me: 1. Books arent divided up by chapter. Or at least the one from my free trial wasnt. The book I listened to was the second in a series, and I had listened to the first book on Audible, so I was shocked that I couldnt see individual chapters in this app. The timer shows the remaining time for the entire book instead. I like to see the chapters because I then know if I should hang out in my car for another couple of minutes just to get to a good breaking point. When I contacted support about this, I was told that the books arent sent with chapter breaks in them, and thats why their app doenst show them. It could be that Audible, being an Amazon company, has the resources to add the chapter breaks, but that doesnt explain how the sleep timer of the Audiobooks.com app can be set to "End of Chapter" as one of the options. That would necessarily mean that the Audiobooks app actually does know where the chapters begin and end. 2. The app is a little glitchy during playback. By this I mean that sometimes the book would repeat sections for no apparent reason. As I listened I would swear that I had heard a certain part before, and then realize that I had just listened to that part 5 minutes ago. Very weird. In the same vein, sometimes I would tap the "30 second forward" button, but it would go backwards instead. Just a minor glitch, but a bit annoying. 3. Last problem: The app has trouble keeping "focus" in the car. For example, I plug in with usb (bluetooth drains my battery too fast), and as soon as I do, my music starts to play, even if the Audiobooks.com app is open. This is normal iPhone behavior, as the same thing happens with the Audible app. However, unlike Audible, if you ever hit pause, the music will start to play again. For some reason, this app cant keep control of the audio, and it becomes highly annoying if you just want to pause for a couple of seconds, only to have the car audio hijacked by your music. I got really tired of doing the dance, so eventually when I wanted to pause, I would just yank the usb cord out of my dash and leave it sit that way. Its entirely possible that this is a problem with my iPhone, and not Audiobooks app, but the bottom line is this doesnt happen with the Audible app. And finally, the subscription cost is equivalent to Audible, and yet there is less selection and fewer subscription tiers to choose from, so I would think this app and service is good enough for those people who for whatever reason dont want to support the Amazon eco-system. With that said, after my free trial was over, I cancelled my account and went back to Audible. Nothing really against this company but I have a smoother experience with Audible.
I love Audiobooks! They have a great selection of all genres!
