Reporting Auroras from the Ground Up since 2012! Aurorasaurus is the worlds first free mobile app to put citizen science and crowd-sourced (Twitter) ground truth observations of aurora on a real-time Google map along with weather and predictions for where the Northern Lights should be visible. When aurora occurs near you, we will let you know promptly and in simple language to increase your chances of spotting this beautiful, rare sight.

Additional features include the capability to register and receive location-based notifications, a real-time monitor of space weather activity, the capability to help verify tweets and search for real sightings, the answers to your questions, and more. We are free of charge and advertisements.

Aurorasaurus was built by scientists for the public--join our community and contribute today! Visit our full website at www.aurorasaurus.org for more information and to access our privacy policy. With Aurorasaurus, your privacy is protected and important to us! This project is funded by the National Science Foundation award AGS-1344296.

Update

Latest update didnt work.

Glitches

The developers will send me an email asking to report if I see any Aurora based on where I am. When I go to fill out the form, its says "there was an error sending"

Not well thought out

The aurora map is good, assuming its accurate, but the Twitter part is silly. Click on the Twitter icons and you may see references to the mass murder in Aurora, CO. Then when you answer "no, they didnt see the aurora", its not obvious how to rid the screen of that tweet (touch the 3 white horizontal lines to the right of the tweet). Shouldnt the map reappear as soon as you say "no"? Definitely not for children.

Requires social media acct to log in; also buggy

To sign up for alerts, you must have a Facebook, Google+ or Twitter account. No provision to register just using an email account and password. Also, there are a number of little glitches. One example: when I clicked on a map pin for an aurora tweet, I was unable to then close the information window for that tweet report without closing the app. Another: not all of the map layers seemed to display. Nice potential, needs work.
