年兽又称年。是古代汉族神话传说中的恶兽。相传古时候每到年末的午夜，年兽就会进攻村子，凡被年兽占领的村子都遭受到残酷的大屠杀，头上的犄角就是屠杀武器。屠杀结束后，年兽会吃掉所有人的头颅。为了防止有人诈尸或侥幸逃脱，年兽假装离开村子后折回来屠杀幸存者，甚至让村子发生剧烈的晃动。就连婴儿、孩童都难以幸免。人们利用年兽怕红色、怕巨响、怕火光的三大弱点，放爆竹，贴门联，驱赶年兽的进攻。为了防止年兽的再次骚扰，放爆竹、贴春联渐渐成为节日习俗，春节由此成为中华民族的象征之一，潜移默化地沿袭至今以及影响世界各地。
