Atrocious Design & Typography Defeat Concept

My desire to read what looks like interesting content was completely thwarted by the terrible presentation of the material. Layout, margins, font choices – none of which seem to be adjustable – are all janky. And the type itself… ech: fake italics, improper punctuation (ever hear of apostrophes and quotation marks?), these all make it feel like a 90s Mosaic site. This may all seem ultra-pedantic, but these decisions all get in the way of reading. Compared to the experience of reading The Magazine (or anything in Instapaper) this is just grating. I would love another publication along the lines of The Magazine, but until they hire a designer, The Awl ain’t it.

Good concept, poor execution

I am a fan of the idea of offering a well-chosen selection of nicely-formatted articles for a low subscription price. Unfortunately, its impossible to know whether Weekend Companion articles are well chosen because the formatting is so terrible. Why are we inflicted with size 18 type on 4" phone screens? Please try to fit more than two sentences on a page. The navigation is also clunky and unintuitive. Take some design cues from The Magazine. Update - 9 dec 2012: Seems like no UI lessons have been learned. Still infuriating to read because of horrible formatting and layout choices. Hire a designer ASAP. Minus another star.

A bit clunky

I dont mind the overly large font but I find the navigation when used left handed to be quite clunky and ultimately frustrating. I dont need to quickly flip between pages when Im reading an article.

This is wonderful.

Great writers, great reads.

A lovely little jewel.

I read the Awl pretty obsessively, so Ive read much of the content before. But I read the Awl pretty obsessively, so Im also happy to finally have a way to offer my financial support. The app itself is minimalist and lovely and compulsively readable.

Caution: habit-forming

The Awl is as difficult to stop reading as the moon is a harsh mistress. A harsh, lethal, soul-crushing mistress. So, if you hate the moon, and you love to ingest culture through your eyeballs, this is a New Yorky app for you.

Also, design!

Nobody thought that The Awl would gather anything besides an enthralling collection to peruse, but can we please talk about how pretty it is? Its the most magaziney my device has felt since ever!
