Perfect for little hands and inquisitive minds, DK’s My First Word Play app is the first interactive app from the team behind the bestselling ‘My First…’ series, which has sold over 15 million copies.

DK My First Word Play is perfect for pre-school children who are just learning to engage with words. With a clean design and games that teach children the basics in a fun and communicative way, it is the perfect start to making learning fun.

The design matches the iconic My First books which provide a colorful and visually creative background for children’s learning. Like the My First books, the app is packed with bright, lively pictures and large, simple text – but here it comes to life!

DK My First Word Play is in Apple Universal format, which means that it can be purchased once and downloaded onto the iPhone and iPad. It’s portable and is fun to use anywhere – whether you’re at home, in the car, or out and about with small children. An easy to use and clear design means that children can use this app by themselves, or with a little help here and there.

The Dorling Kindersley Limited ("DK") My First Word Play app uses a third-party app service provider ("Flurry") in order to create accurate, real-time user data reports so that DK can continue to improve the app user experience. The service collects and submits anonymous aggregated data about which app features are being used most frequently as well as your mobile device UDID (unique phone Identifiers) and/or IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identities), which are also anonymised via a secure hashing protocol, to Adobe servers. This information will be used to continually improve the features and functionality that DK releases in its subsequent versions of its mobile apps.

Visually nice but could improve

As always, DK has lovely photos, but I would love to have the sounds of each letter spoken in the phonics game along with each word in the dictionary.

Baffled by lack of sound

This is visually appealing but has limited value for pre-readers since the publishers chose to add noises, rather than word and letter sounds to the dictionary and phonics games. When a child touches the cup, there is a tinkling sound, rather than the spoken word, "cup". I am completely baffled as to why a picture dictionary does not speak the words. I have the DK computer dictionary, which does read the entries aloud, and am really disappointed in this app. I hope it will be updated soon.

Needs sound

The only thing lacking in this app is sound. I want the dictionary words read when my child touches the word and a read aloud mode for the phonics game is a must. So far not worth my money unless they do an update to add sound.

I expected better from DK

The pictures and presentation are classic DK and very well done. The app itself, however, leaves much to be desired. I would have liked to have seen uppercase letters as well as the lowercase ones provided, so that I could spell names properly (one of the most common things I spell with my son). The sounds in the dictionary serve no real purpose. I would have preferred to have the words pronounced instead. The matching game is okay, but those are a dime a dozen. The only novel thing about this version is that the pictures you match arent identical. Im not sure if some kids would find this confusing or not. Overall, there isnt much new here, especially for the price. Hopefully, future updates will make this app worthwhile. Its biggest plus right now is that it is adaptable to both the iPad and the iPod.
