Being selfish is great if it helps others! That may sound unprincipled, but it has inspired the Salvation Army to produce a new iPhone application. The aim is to encourage users to feel great themselves by doing someone else a good turn. Focusing on small but positive details of everyday living, the good turns are the chips making up the mosaic of a better world.
"Compliment someone." reflects strength of character. "Take the stairs rather than the lift." contributes to good health, while "Let someone past you at the till." fosters community spirit. All three are examples of actions suggested at the start of the app.
In addition to stock good turns, users can give free rein to their creativity and invent and try out good turns of their own. Click to carry out good turns based on the general user trend. Publish your own good turns on Facebook: at your discretion, you can reveal those you have done, those you have omitted, or both, on your own Facebook profile.
The Salvation Army hopes this app will motivate people to take a positive approach rather than sit back and comment, "they really ought to...". A good turn a day puts the doer in a great mood.
